Damongo: Farmers Unhappy With Tractor Owners Over The Cost of Ploughing

Damongo: farmers unhappy with tractor owners over the cost of ploughing

Farmers in the West Gonja municipality municipal assembly of the Savannah region are unhappy over high cost of tractor ploughing.

The farmers during a phone-in on PAD FM 95.1, lamented over what they call over pricing of ploughing.

The unhappy farmers on PADFM's Friday morning program "what's it", which is designed to allow listeners to phone with challenges affecting their everyday live, expressed dissatisfaction over the cost of GHC200 ploughing per an acre, which they say will affect the number of acres they intend to farm this year.

Last Friday, the over one hour program recorded over 80% contributions from the farming communities who said the price of ploughing per acre is unacceptable considering the cost of fertilizer, chemicals (well known as condem) and other farm inputs, indicating that this could lead to  food insecurity in the near future if not well checked.

The farmers pleaded with tractor owners and operators to reduce the price and also, called on stakeholders, political leaders to help out as farming is their only source of livelihood.

Some also suggested that government should bring in tractors at subsidized rates in order to supplementing the Planting for Food and Jobs program.

Speaking with tractors owners in the municipality they also lamented that the cost of fuel, spare parts and other factors led to the high cost of ploughing per an acre, saying the situation is beyond their control.
