 Let's create a positive culture to support people with disability to reach their full potentials- Mr. Anthony Dogbedo

The Programs Manager, Hope for Future Generations (HFFG), Mr Anthony Dogbedo said people with disability are discriminated against with the language (names) communities address them with, hence the need to collaborate and treat them equally for them to be able to achieve their full potentials.


He stated that some disability persons are more creative and far advanced, hence must be supported to achieve greater heights in life.

Mr. Dogbedo said this at Damongo, Savannah regional capital on the program, the social behavior change communication and stigma reduction for Mental Health and Disability inclusion projet organized by Hope for Future Generations (HFFG), The PsyKForum and Ghana Somubi Dwumadie on 5th April, 2022.


He said the project is set to implement interventions that will improve the conditions of people living with disability including mental health conditions

He called on the media to be more inclusive in elevating the stigmatization of people living with disability and to use the right names for the people of disability in their reportage.


According to World Health Organization (WHO), disability prevalence in Ghana is at 12.8%. According to the ministry of health the number continues to increase due to demographic trends and increase in chronic health conditions.

Therefore, the need to adopt various international agreement and implementation of policies and programs that protect the fundamental freedoms of all Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Also to promote and respect their inherent dignity and make provisions that safeguard their rights.


Hope for Future Generations is a non-governmental, not for profit making organization that seeks to improve the health and socio- economic status of women, children, young people and person's with disabilities through innovative and acceptable participatory strategies. 

PsyKForum is a national non-governmental organization focused on forming partnerships for psychological well-being.


Mr. Takora Dramani Joshua, the president of Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD) in the Savannah Region expressed his excitement for the organizers of the program, saying that this will help stop the stigmatization they go through day in day out in the communities. He added that involving the media, traditional leaders and other institutions will help not to discriminate against persons with disabilities and also call them by their appropriate names.

The project objectives is to increase the use of positive disability and mental health language among community stakeholders and the media, to improve enforcement of Ghana's disability and mental health policies and laws by duty bearers and To create a positive culture of support to allow people with disabilities, including people with mental health conditions, to reach their full potential.


HFFP and the PsyKForum have, as a consortium, been awarded a grant from Ghana Somubi Dwumadie (Ghana participation programme) to promote mental health and disability inclusion in Ghana. The Ghana Somubi programme is a four year disability programme in Ghana with a specific focus on mental health. 

The program is funded by UK aid from the UK Government and is run by an option led consortium, which also consists of Basic Needs - Ghana, kings college London, Sight Savers International and Tropical Health.
