Yagbum Junior High School's Sakara Adam wins 2022 Royal Club Spelling Bee Competition-Damongo

Sakara Adam of the Yagbum Junior High School, Damongo, emerged winner of the 2022 Spelling Bee competition at the just ended Royals Club Independence Spelling Bee competition held at the Damongo Senior High School Assembly Hall on Friday, March 4, 2022.

He beat 45 other contestants in an intense nine (9) rounds of spelling.

The West Gonja Municipal Spelling Bee, a 9-year-old Royal club municipal spelling competition, has had a significant impact on Damango childrens' education and the West Gonja Municipality's junior high schools.

The competition began with 46 total participants in the first round, with scores falling out in subsequent rounds until the 7th round, when two finalists spelled their way through, which was keenly won by Sakara Adam in the 9th round after the two finalists all spelled their words correctly in the eighth round.

Sakara Adam of Yagbum JHS block B, Aminu Huzeifa of Japka JHS block B, and Seidu Adijah of Girls model JHS, who took first, second, and third place respectively, received equal prizes, which included laptop school bags, a longman dictionary, three novel books, and a mathematical set, as well as a trophy for the winning school.

A novel was given to each of the 46 participants who took part. This, according to the organizers of the spelling Bee competition, is due to lack of sponsorship

In an interview, Mr. Kotochi Joshua Issahaku the president of the Royals club, the organizers of the spelling Bee, is worried  that they have not been able to involve all schools in the municipality due to a lack of sponsorships, and thus, appealed for help from philanthropies, politicians, stakeholders, and able individuals to help them to be able to involve all schools in the municipality by organizing them into zones before meeting for the finals, as well as sponsor the winners in their educational pursuits.

Chief Tolodompewura Ahmed Abdallah, the program's chairman, laments that parents' lack of involvement in the program is demotivating and  encouraged parents to come and participate in the program to encourage and cheer up their children to perform well.

"I haven't seen many parents and I will always be grateful if I see parents coming to cheer up their children, because this is what happens elsewhere, so why is it that the parents in Damongo refuse to do so?" he questioned

He praised the students for the seriousness with which they approached the competition, noting that Seidu Adijah of Girls Model JHS, who came in third place, collapsed in the seventh round because she didn't make it to first place.

"You can see clearly that the children came here to context with seriousness".

He also warns teachers from other schools to thoroughly prepare their children before going to compete. He advised pupils to use social media for studying rather than for things that would distract them from their studies.

"Let us use social media for vital things, because many of you use phones." He stated his case.

Chief Tolodompewura Ahmed Abdallah thanked the program's organizers for putting on such an important educational event, and urged stakeholders, opinion leaders, and politicians to back such initiatives.

It was broadcast live on Radio for Peace and Development (PAD FM).

The Spelling Bee is presented by Royals Club and supported by a sitting Member of parliament of the Damongo constituency Hon. Abu Jinapor and blessed child electrical.
